TRAVEL HEALTH
-
A pre-travel consultation helps you understand what vaccines, medications, and health precautions may be recommended for your specific trip. We review your destination, itinerary, length of stay, activities, medical history, and vaccine history to give you personalized recommendations before you go.
-
We recommend booking your travel consultation at least 4–6 weeks before departure whenever possible. This gives enough time to review your itinerary, complete any vaccines that require multiple doses, and allow certain vaccines to become effective before you travel.
That said, it is never too early — or too late — to come in.
-
Please bring your travel itinerary, vaccine records, a list of current medications, any relevant medical history, and any forms or documentation you need reviewed. If you don't have all of this, bring what you have — we'll work from there.
-
Yes. JEMA offers a wide range of travel vaccines onsite — no prescription from your family doctor required before you arrive.
-
Yes. JEMA is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We provide Yellow Fever consultations, vaccination when appropriate, and the official documentation required for travel.
-
Yes. If you become unwell during or after travel, JEMA can provide a post-travel consultation. We review your travel history, symptoms, and possible exposures, and can refer you to a physician if further medical assessment is needed.
-
Yes. If you completed your pre-travel consultation at JEMA, your post-travel consultation is complimentary.
-
Your consultation includes a review of your medical and vaccine history, your travel itinerary, and any special health considerations. From there, we'll provide personalized recommendations for vaccines and medications relevant to your trip, guidance on malaria prevention, traveller's diarrhea, altitude illness, and other destination-specific risks, and practical advice on staying healthy during travel. You'll leave with a vaccination record and, where applicable, documentation for entry requirements.
-
Yes — even if you've been before. Vaccine recommendations vary by destination and change over time. Each new trip needs its own assessment based on your current itinerary and health status.
-
Some vaccines — Yellow Fever is the most common example — may be required as a condition of entry into certain countries. Some destinations also require proof of vaccination based on your travel route or stopovers, regardless of your final destination. Other vaccines are recommended based on destination health risks but not legally required. Your consultation will clarify which applies to your itinerary.
-
Travel medicine — including consultations and vaccines — is not subsidised by the provincial government. The fees cover the cost of your vaccines and the comprehensive, individualized health assessment provided at your appointment. JEMA provides receipts, and some extended health plans offer partial or full coverage depending on your plan.
-
Vaccine recommendations are individualized and depend on your age, health status, vaccine history, current medications, travel duration, and the type and destination of your travel. JEMA can provide telephone consultations — please have your vaccine history available or emailed to the clinic before your appointment.

Side effects vary by vaccine but are generally mild and resolve within a day or two. Common side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, fatigue, headache, mild fever, or a mild rash. Nausea or brief fainting can occur, particularly in adolescents, and is most common in the period immediately after the injection.
